As one of the most important cities in the world, London is teeming with historic landmarks that have played a vital role in the country’s past.
One of London’s most iconic sights, St Paul’s Cathedral is located a short tube journey from Waterloo East station. Visitors can take in the building’s many fascinating features including the vast dome, the third largest organ in the UK and its extensive crypt. The crypt contains the tombs of significant figures from British history, such as Lord Nelson, Lord Wellington and the Cathedral’s architect, Sir Christopher Wren.
Relive the spirit of the Blitz at the Churchill War Rooms, where Britain’s most esteemed Prime Minister directed the response to London’s Second World War bombardment. Learn about the lives of Churchill’s staff and discover how some of the most important decisions in this country’s history were made. The Churchill Museum gives visitors a deeper insight into the person behind the legend, making a visit here a genuinely rewarding day out. What’s more, this intriguing place is easily accessible, just a couple of tube stops away from Victoria train station. Book your train tickets online in advance with Southern Railway and you can find great offers and savings.
Also a short distance from Victoria, Apsley House is a fascinating historic landmark often overlooked by visitors to London. Once the home of the Duke of Wellington, this listed building contains a range of artefacts for visitors to discover. See the interior of the house, which has changed little since the Napoleonic era, and visit the acclaimed Waterloo Gallery containing an impressive range of paintings. Apsley House is centrally located, next to Hyde Park Corner at the end of Park Lane.
Elsewhere, experience life on the high seas by visiting The Golden Hinde, a replica of the boat that famed explorer Sir Francis Drake used to circumnavigate the globe, becoming the first Englishman to do so. Drake used his travels as an opportunity to get rich by sacking Spanish ships he encountered along his journey, allowing him to amass a vast collection of treasure. The Hinde can be found a short walk from London Bridge train station and is close to a number of other popular attractions such as the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Southwark Cathedral.
You can save money when you visit all of these iconic landmarks by booking your train tickets online with Southern Railway and taking advantage of the 2FOR1 offers. What’s more, check out our destinations pages for more brilliant ideas about what to do in London.
