If you’re a fan of whiling away the afternoon at an outdoor market, then London is one of the best cities in the world to visit. The city is renowned for its fantastic markets selling everything from clothes to antiques to delicious fresh food. Here is a rundown of some of the best London markets to visit.
Portobello Market is one of the most famous and busiest markets in London. Stretching for around two miles along the Portobello Road, stall holders sell everything from fresh fruit and veg to handmade clothes and jewellery to antique trinkets. The market can get very busy at the weekends during the summer months, so be prepared to battle the crowds!
Spitalfields Market is a fabulous indoor market in East London with a huge range of shops, restaurants and up to 110 trader stalls on its busiest days. Traders sell a wonderful array of vintage clothing, fine art, jewellery, children’s clothes, handbags, hats and accessories. It’s a great place to go for something totally unique and is fully accessible if you have little kids in buggies.
Any foodies in the family will absolutely love Borough Market, which is just a couple of minutes’ walk from London Bridge Station. Here you’ll find fine artisan foods from both local and international producers – from breads, cheeses, preserves and meats to fine wine and delicious cakes. The full market is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so try and go on one of these days to get the complete Borough experience.
Camden Market is another hugely popular destination that gets extremely busy in the summer. You’ll find a wide range of stalls selling clothes, accessories, music and knick knacks along with a dedicated food section where you can sample authentic cuisine from all over the world. If it’s a sunny day, grab yourselves a bite to eat then head down to the river to enjoy your food in the sunshine. If you’re bringing little ones with you, bear in mind that the footpaths get very crowded so steering buggies can be a bit tricky.
For something a bit more cheap and cheerful, head north east to Walthamstow. Here you’ll find fruit and veg stalls, homeware including pots, pans, bedding and cushions, along with very reasonably priced clothing. Again, Saturday is a bit of a crazy day, but it can be worth it for the bargains.
If you’re planning a day in London, shopping in one of its many markets is a must. To make sure you have pennies to spare when you get there, why not take advantage of the Southern Railway discount when booking in advance online. Check our latest offers page to find the best deal on your journey.
