Set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens, Arundel Castle has been open to visitors seasonally for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England, each having its own unique place in history and is home to priceless works of art. Come and see paintings and furniture, tapestries and stained glass, china and clocks, sculpture and carving, heraldry and armour in stunning room settings. 10 minutes walk from Arundel station.
I enjoyed the Southern Railway train journey, showing my little brother the cows, sheep and horses standing in the fields as we pulled away from the city. The seats were really comfortable. As we pulled into Arundel we could see the huge castle in the distance. I had a wow feeling!
First we looked around the vast ground, and went into the ancient Fitzalan Chapel. Next we went to see the Armoury, which I liked best. I learnt that children as young as six had to learn to use weapons, times were hard and men had to know how to defend their country from enemies. The Keep gave us a great view over Arundel and people below looked smaller than normal. The Guard on duty there told us that soldiers who misbehaved were thrown over the battlements. Yikes, I'm glad I didn't live in those days!
I wish to thank the South London Press and the Southern Railway Kids’ Tourist Board for choosing me to be a reviewer for a day. I had a wonderful day with my family and it didn't rain!
“We had a great day out as a family, thankfully it didn't rain and the children had a thorough exploration of the grounds and the castle. Thomas made us very proud, he asked some fantastic questions and got excellent answers from the obliging, well informed guards.”
