Date: 14 Sep 2011
As part of a £3.1m investment to install an additional 156 new ticket machines at its stations by the end of Jan 2012, train operator Southern has begun the next phase in the programme to install new ticket machines at many of its stations in the Greater London Area.
19 new machines are being installed during September with another 16 to follow in October.
Southern’s Project Manager, Michelle Nelson said: “We’ve already installed 67 new ticket machines at our Sussex stations this year and 30 across the network last year. This is the next stage in providing equipment which will cut down queuing times at ticket offices for our passengers.”
Southern has plans to introduce some useful enhancements to the options available on every ticket machine. Michelle added: “You’ll be able to buy your car park tickets from ticket machines later this month and we have plans for further improvements such as pop-up screens showing engineering works and information regarding timetable changes when there are special events such as the November bonfire events or even our Christmas period services.”
Also among improvements to come will be train departure information which will show passengers train times from the station they are buying the ticket from, and unlike now, passengers will be able to buy tickets to enable them to travel from a different station than the one where they are using the ticket machine.
19 new machines are being installed during September at the following stations:
Purley, Purley Oaks, Riddlesdown, Upper Warlingham, South Croydon, Sanderstead, Kenley Whyteleafe South, Caterham, Waddon, Carshalton, Hackbridge, Carshalton Beeches, Mitcham Junction, Ewell East, Cheam, Banstead and Horsham (2).
A further 16 new machines will be installed during October at the following stations:
Kingswood, Sutton (2), Birkbeck, Selhurst, South Bermondsey, Streatham, Streatham Hill, Ashtead (2), Preston Park, Crawley, Ford, Polegate, Pevensey & Westham and Collington.
