During the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Southern expects to have higher numbers of passengers using its services. To meet the additional demand Southern is running additional late night services from London Victoria to East Croydon, Three Bridges, Worthing, Eastbourne, Gatwick Airport and Brighton, and to increase capacity, is adding carriages to many off-peak services, providing just over 300,000 extra seats.
Southern has used data provided by the Olympic Delivery Authority which provides postcode information from ticket sales to plan these service changes. Extra Southern staff and Southern volunteers will also be available to help at busy stations throughout the Games period.
An enhanced service will run all weekend between London (Victoria and Waterloo), Epsom, Dorking and Horsham for spectators travelling to watch the Cycle Road Races at Leatherhead, Box Hill & Westhumble and Dorking on the weekend of 28/29 July.
Passengers can download a special Box Hill Race Day timetable.
Cycle Policy
During Games time and the time between the Games and Paralympic Games, For the safety and comfort of passengers, Southern will be extending its current cycle policy (in some areas) to cover the whole day, rather than just peak periods, for the length of the Games.
We will welcome fully folded (Brompton style) bikes on our trains at any time, however, in addition to the usual peak time restrictions we have in place (details at southernrailway.com), further restrictions will apply throughout the period 27 July to 9 September.
Non-fully folded bikes will not be allowed on any Southern or Gatwick Express train on the following routes:
- Any Gatwick Express service
- Mainline services between London Bridge/London Victoria and Gatwick (including via Redhill)
- Metro routes
- West London Route between Watford Junction and East Croydon
The Olympic Road Race cycle event will take place on July 28th and 29th. From the start of service on 28th July to close of service on 29th July, non-fully folding bikes will not be permitted between London Bridge/London Victoria and Boxhill & Westhumble on routes via Mitcham Junction, West Croydon, Sutton, Epsom and Horsham.
