Southern’s innovative ‘black box’ highly commended at awards

Date: 27 Jun 2012

Southern’s new driver competency management system has been highly commended at the prestigious Modern Railways 2012 Innovations Awards.

The system, dubbed CHURROS uses ‘black box’ on-train monitoring and recording equipment to monitor driver performance and identify long term trends. The system provides for the first time, a system which can effectively assess the performance of drivers outside the training environment, and provide good quality feedback.

Simon Green, Southern’s Chief Engineer said: “I am delighted that our work to improve driver performance has been recognised at the awards. Significant amounts of time, money and effort are invested in driver training and competence assessments and this commendation recognises the value of this innovative system.”

The system replaces the existing cumbersome and time consuming manual analysis of information snapshots downloaded from the data recorders. It also leads to the opportunity to reduce costs and increase the effectiveness of a driver competency and performance management system.
