Travel advice during the industrial action

If you are travelling today, please visit nationalrail.co.uk and use the journey planner or live departure boards for the latest service information.

The reduced timetable will remain in place until Saturday 21 January (inclusive), however we will operate additional services where possible. Please check the live departures at nationalrail.co.uk for the latest information.

What services will be affected?

All routes are affected; check our map showing routes with an altered service in brown or grey

  • On routes shown in grey, there will be no Southern service. See below for details of ticket acceptance on alternative routes
  • On routes shown in brown, you are advised that there will be a reduced service and you are advised to allow longer for your journey and to avoid peak times if possible
  • On routes shown with a grey dotted line, only buses will operate. 

Key alterations include:

  • A very limited peak service between Brighton and London
  • No Gatwick Express services between Gatwick Airport and Brighton
  • A reduced service will run between London and Littlehampton/Eastbourne and Ore
  • No Southern services between East Croydon and Milton Keynes Central via Kensington Olympia
  • Very limited peak services between Tulse Hill and London Bridge
  • No Southern services to/from Beckenham Junction
  • No Southern service to/from Guildford
  • No Southern service to/from Wimbledon
  • A reduced service will operate between London and Caterham and between London and Tattenham Corner
  • Very limited peak service between Redhill and London
  • No direct service between Tonbridge or Reigate and London (a change of trains required at Redhill)
  • No Southern trains between Lewes and Seaford (bus service in operation)
  • No direct service between London and either Portsmouth or Southampton (a change of trains will be required at Barnham)
  • No direct Southern trains between Ashford International and Brighton (a change of trains will be required at Eastbourne)

You are advised to avoid travelling at peak times and to allow extra time for your journey if at all possible.

Any trains not running because of these planned alterations have been removed from the timetable database. They therefore not appear at all (rather than show as cancelled) on online journey planners or station information screens.

How do I plan my journey?

National Rail journey planners will be updated with the service we intend to operate from around 02:00 the day before, so please visit nationalrail.co.uk and use the journey planner for service information. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of other journey planners.

Alternatives if trains aren’t running or are limited on my route

Will you pay for taxis or provide replacement buses if there are no trains?
Please allow plenty of time for your journey. We will not be able to provide taxis. We have arranged ticket acceptance as listed below.

Can I use my ticket on other train operators’ services, the tube, London buses or local buses?
We have approached all transport operators that provide a service on affected routes and details of those that are able to accept are as follows:

  • Brighton & Hove bus services:
    Brighton & Hove buses will accept rail tickets for any reasonable journey across their network.
  • Gatwick Express:
    Only tickets that are normally valid for travel on Gatwick Express services can be used on the Gatwick Express network.
  • Great Western:
    Rail tickets can be used for reasonable journeys between:
    • Redhill and Reigate
    • Brighton and Southampton Central
  • London Buses:
    Rail tickets can be used for reasonable journeys between:
    • Tulse Hill and West Norwood on routes 2, 432, 468, 68 & 196
    • Crystal Palace and Beckenham Junction on route 358
    • Peckham Rye and Herne Hill via North Dulwich on route 37
    • Queens Road Peckham and New Cross Gate on routes 171, 177, 436 and 136
    • Route 405 between Redhill and West Croydon via Merstham
    • Between Mitcham Junction and Balham on route 355
  • London Midland:
    Passengers who hold tickets routed ‘Kensington Olympia’ or ‘Southern Only’ for journeys from / to stations across the London Midland network and stations south of London can use London Midland services to / from London Euston.
  • London Overground:
    Rail tickets can be used for reasonable journeys between:
    • West Croydon, Crystal Palace, Peckham Rye and Canada Water
    • Clapham Junction and Watford Junction via Willesden Junction
    • Watford Junction and London Euston
  • London Trams:
    Rail tickets can be used for reasonable journeys across the whole London Trams network.
  • London Underground:
    Rail tickets can be used for reasonable journeys between the following points only, THE TICKETS CANNOT BE USED AT INTERMEDIATE TUBE STATIONS:
    • Canada Water and London Bridge
    • Balham and Victoria / London Bridge / Euston
    • London Bridge and Victoria 
    • Victoria and Blackfriars
    • Victoria and Euston
  • Metrobus:
    Metrobus buses will accept rail tickets for any reasonable journey across their network.
  • Southeastern:
    Southeastern will accept the following:
    • Rail tickets with an origin or destination of Birkbeck can use train services to / from Elmers End
    • Rail tickets with an origin or destination of Honor Oak Park or Brockley can use train services to / from Nunhead
    • Rail tickets routed via Haywards Heath, via East Croydon and 'Southern Only' will be accepted for reasonable journeys between:
      • Hastings and London via Tonbridge
      • Tunbridge Wells and London
      • Ashford International and London
        EXCLUDING HIGH SPEED SERVICES TO / FROM LONDON ST PANCRAS
  • South West Trains:
    South West trains are limited in capacity and we strongly advise that you do NOT to attempt to travel; but if you do travel please allow extra time to complete your journey.

    Tickets routed ‘Southern Only’ can be used for reasonable journeys between:

    • Portsmouth Harbour / Havant and Southampton Central
    • Dorking and London via Wimbledon
  • Thameslink:
    • Rail tickets with an origin or destination of Honor Oak Park and Brockley can also use Nunhead or Crofton Park instead.
    • Rail tickets with an origin or destination of London Victoria can use Thameslink services to / from London Blackfriars or London Bridge.
    • Rail tickets routed ‘Southern Only’ will be accepted on Thameslink services between Brighton and London Bridge / London Blackfriars.
    • Should they wish to do so, ticket holders with an origin or destination of stations between Wembley Central and Milton Keynes Central for journeys to / from south of London, can use their ticket at their nearest station on the Thameslink route between London and Bedford to travel on Thameslink (but not East Midlands Trains) services to be able to complete their journey.

Are there any restrictions for the carriage of luggage, bikes or heavy luggage on bus services?
Carriage of all items is subject to space and at the sole discretion of the bus driver/operator. Some bus operators do not allow the carriage of animals or bikes on their vehicles. Assistance dogs are permitted on all bus services.

I’m travelling to or from the airport on a day affected by the industrial action, what can I do?
If you are planning to use our services for travel to or from an airport, please check the effect on your journey using the information above. You are advised to allow plenty of time for your journey and to consider alternatives methods of transport wherever possible. We do not provide compensation for missed flights etc.

I’ve booked assisted travel or intend to do so, what should I do?
We are contacting all customers that have booked assistance on affected dates. If you have booked assistance for our trains through another operator or have not heard from us, please contact us on 0800 138 1016 to discuss your journey. Whilst trains are expected to be very busy, in common with other passengers we cannot guarantee to get you to your destination. However, our assisted travel and station teams are available to provide you with advice and support.

I’m using your service as part of a longer journey involving other train operators, what about me?
Customers will be able to make the same journey* on their ticket by any Off Peak Southern, Thameslink or Gatwick Express train on the date of the ticket.

*If there is no service to / from the origin or destination on your ticket you may use it from / to the nearest alternative station served by a Southern, Thameslink or Gatwick Express train service.

This does NOT apply to the services of other operators where there is no Southern service e.g. Milton Keynes to Clapham Junction when you will need to travel on the closest possible timed train to the original service you were booked on.

Will first class accommodation be available to Standard Class ticket holders?
First class accommodation will not be declassified on Southern services. You must have a first class ticket to sit in first class accommodation.

 

Can I drive to an alternative station and park for free?
With the exception of passengers who hold a monthly or longer period car park season ticket for Seaford, car park tickets are only valid for the station car park that they were purchased for.

Monthly or longer period car park season ticket holders for Seaford station car park can also use Lewes station car park (subject to spaces being available) without additional charge.

Can I take my bicycle on the train?
The normal peak-time cycle restrictions will remain in place on strike days. Please check our cycle policy for more information.

Will peak travel restrictions still apply?
All the normal time restrictions on the use of the Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets will remain in place as will time restrictions on railcards.
