What is the London Fare Zones area?
The London area is divided into 6 fare zones, with zone 1 being the ‘Central’ zone and zones 2 to 6 forming rings around it. These are the same zones that are used for the popular London Travelcard. Details of the stations included in each fare zone are shown on the attached map.
Southern Zonal Map (66KB)
Anytime Single, Anytime Return and Off-Peak Day Return fares wholly within the London Fares Zone area (zones 1-6) are priced by zones - just like the London Underground.
Note: Tickets will still be sold from station A to station B rather than between zones eg East Croydon (zone 5) to Kensington Olympia (zone 2) will be the same fare as Sutton (zone 5) to BatterseaPark (zone 2).
When purchasing Single, Return and Off-Peak Day Return tickets, you will pay for travel in the zones in which your journey starts and to where it ends. Fares will be based on the most appropriate route which is not necessarily the shortest. It will also be for any zones you travel through, however you will only be charged once for each zone.
This means the same fare will apply for similar journeys involving travel within a single zone or within a combination of zones - regardless of which part of London you are in, which train operator or combination of train operators you are travelling on.
As well as daily fares, Southern also offer Zonal Season tickets. These are for Southern routes only, as other Train Operating Companies may not carry the same conditions.
Railcard and GroupSave discounts
Certain railcards can be used to obtain up to 34% discount on London zonal fares. However, minimum fare and time of day restrictions apply in some cases.
The Terms and Conditions of the individual railcards explain when discounted tickets can be purchased and minimum fares that might apply.
GroupSave discount can also be applied to these London zonal fares, where 3 or 4 travel for the price of 2. Fares will be based on the most appropriate route, not necessarily the shortest, after 09:30 Monday to Friday and anytime at weekends and public holidays.
