During peak periods, many of our services are extremely busy, therefore regular (non-folding) cycles cannot be carried on many of our services during these times. Fully folding cycles are welcome on our trains at any time and we ask that these are fully folded and carried before going through the gateline.
The following restrictions apply:
Our peak cycle restrictions are shown on the map below. Regular (non-folding) cycles cannot be carried:
- On services due to arrive into London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones) between 07:00 and 10:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
- On services due to depart from London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones) between 16:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
- Regular cycles may be carried at any time on services for journeys made wholly within the Green zone.
East Coastway
Direct trains between Brighton and Ashford International
Space on board these services, which are only formed of 2 coaches, is extremely limited at certain times including many summer weekends. Ordinary cycles may be carried so long as there is space available. Please note that wheelchair users will always take precedence for the multi-use space in our trains.
Off peak travel/non restricted services
Bike space on board our trains is extremely limited and because cycle reservations are not possible on Southern services we cannot guarantee that space will be available. In the interests of the safety and comfort of our passengers, we reserve the right to refuse access where cycle spaces are already occupied or where services are especially busy, however our staff will assist with finding alternative services.
Rail replacement buses
For safety reasons, rail replacement buses are unable to convey regular cycles. Please check for any engineering works before you travel at nationalrail.co.uk or 08457 48 49 50.
Cycle storage
We aim to provide safe and secure cycle storage facilities at our stations and therefore Southern has invested heavily in new and additional cycle storage facilities at many stations. For details of facilities, please visit the station information section of our website.
