Cycle policy

During peak periods, many of our services are extremely busy, therefore regular (non-folding) cycles cannot be carried on many of our services during these times. Fully folding cycles are welcome on our trains at any time and we ask that these are fully folded and carried before going through the ticket gates.

The following restrictions apply:

Our peak cycle restrictions are shown on the map below. Regular (non-folding) cycles cannot be carried:

  • On services due to arrive into London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones) between 07:00 and 10:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • On services due to depart from London/Brighton or Kensington Olympia (the Red zones) between 16:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays)
  • Regular cycles may be carried at any time on services for journeys made wholly within the Green zone.

East Coastway

Direct trains between Brighton and Ashford International

Space on board these services, which are only formed of 2 coaches, is extremely limited at certain times including many summer weekends. Ordinary cycles may be carried so long as there is space available. Please note that wheelchair users have priority in the accessible area on board our trains.

Off peak travel/non restricted services

Bike space on board our trains is extremely limited and because cycle reservations are not possible on Southern services we cannot guarantee that space will be available. In the interests of the safety and comfort of our passengers, we reserve the right to refuse access where cycle spaces are already occupied or where services are especially busy, however our staff will assist with finding alternative services.

Cycle events

As most cycle rides take place on the weekend, it is the off peak period and therefore (as per our cycle policy) there are no restrictions to carrying regular (non-folding) cycles on our services. However, as services are likely to be busy we may have to implement a queuing system at affected stations, so participants are advised to allow extra time for their journey home. Some events require additional restrictions to be put in place and customers are advised to check for details on our cycle events on our network page.

Rail replacement buses

For safety reasons, rail replacement buses are unable to convey regular cycles. Please check for any engineering works before you travel at or 03457 48 49 50.

Cycle storage

We aim to provide safe and secure cycle storage facilities at our stations and therefore Southern has invested heavily in new and additional cycle storage facilities at many stations. For details of facilities, please visit the station information section of our website.

National Rail Guide to Cycling by Train

National Rail encourages the integrated use of cycles and trains - two convenient and environmentally friendly forms of transport. This leaflet summarises each train company's policy for carrying cycles by train.
