Amended South West Trains service from Saturday 5 to Sunday 28 August

Engineering work is taking place from Saturday 5 to Monday 28 August to extend platforms 1-9 at London Waterloo. This will allow trains to run with more carriages, providing more seats and space for customers.

This is part of the Waterloo and South West upgrade, you can find further information here and see a video detailing the improvements here.

While the work takes place, fewer South West Trains services will run and the following changes will apply:

  • The majority of stations will have fewer train services.
  • Trains and stations will be busier than usual, especially in the morning and evening peak times on weekdays.
  • A queuing system will be in place outside some stations.
  • Some journey times will be extended.
  • Other operators services will be busier than usual while customers take alternative routes, including London Underground.
  • The following stations will be closed: Chessington North, Chessington South, Malden Manor, Norbiton, Queenstown Road and Tolworth
  • Earlsfield will be closed until 10:00 and again from 16:30 to 19:30.
  • Please note that during the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday 25 August to Monday
28 August, there will be additional works at London Waterloo and platforms 1-14 will be closed. This will further reduce the number of trains that will run right across the network, but the impact will be more significant closer to London.

There will be changes to your journeys but South West Trains are doing everything possible to reduce inconvenience and make your journey as smooth as possible. This includes:

  • Running longer trains throughout the day to provide more space and help you travel outside of the busiest times
  • Temporarily open platforms 20-24 (the former London Waterloo International Terminal) to reduce some of the impact of closing platforms 1-9
  • Work round the clock to finish the works as quickly as possible

Customer Advice:

  • Consider travelling from a different station or via an alternative route where there may be a more frequent service.
  • Travel slightly earlier or later than normal. The busiest trains arrive into London between 08:00 and 09:00 and leave London between 17.30 and 18:30.
  • If you are able to do so, you might want to consider working from home or taking a holiday during some or all of this time.

Because fewer South West Trains will be running throughout this period, the following Southern and Thameslink services are expected to be busier:

  • Southern services between Dorking, Epsom and London
  • Southern services between Southampton Central, Portsmouth and London
  • Thameslink and Southern services between Wimbledon and London
