Major improvement works affecting trains between Watford Junction and London Euston from Friday 3 to Monday 6 April 2015

In the past 15 years, the number of trains using the West Coast Main Line has doubled - and it's getting busier. Much of the infrastructure around Watford dates from the 1960s and with trains running around the clock it's becoming increasingly unreliable.

The Improvement works, when complete, will:

  • Renew all signalling between Kings Langley and Bushey allowing greater flexibility and quicker return to a normal service after disruption
  • Lay over 15km (9 miles) of new track giving a smoother journey
  • Modify the overhead line equipment to make it more reliable
  • Reconstruct Orphanage Road Bridge to allow for future line speeds of 125 mph

The line into and out of London Euston will be closed for four days over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend to allow Network Rail to carry this  work.  There are also further works taking place at other locations along the West Coast Main Line route.

Travelling on the West Coast Main line and getting to and from London over the Easter weekend will be very difficult and it is recommended that, where possible, you travel either before the work starts or after it has finished; although it is anticipated that trains before and after the Easter weekend will be busy, so please plan and book your journey as soon as possible.

The following gives an overview of the key routes to/from London:

?    Glasgow travel via Edinburgh for Virgin Trains East Coast services to London Kings Cross
?    Birmingham travel on Chiltern Railways services between Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone
?    The Lake District, the North West and Manchester area use a combination of Virgin Trains, First TransPennine and Northern Rail services to travel via Sheffield for East Midlands Trains services to London St Pancras
?    Liverpool/Runcorn/Stafford and Tamworth use a combination of Virgin Trains, London Midland and CrossCountry services to travel via Nuneaton and Leicester for East Midlands Trains services to London St Pancras

To plan your journey please use the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner, which gives details of the changes and the impact on your journey.
