Improvement works

From time to time, often at weekends or public holidays, Southern Railway have to make alterations to train services, usually for planned Improvement works.

Amended 23:47 London Victoria to Oxted service from Monday 26 to Friday 30 September

 

Engineering work is taking place between East Croydon and Oxted from 00:25 until 04:50 each day, closing some lines. Read more about engineering work and why it is necessary.

The 23:47 London Victoria to Oxted service will be replaced by a bus between East Croydon and Oxted.

Amended 23:08 London Bridge to Horsham service from Monday 26 to Friday 30 September

 

Engineering work is taking place between Earlswood and Three Bridges, with some lines closed. Read more about engineering work and why it is necessary.

The 23:08 (Monday - Thursday) London Bridge to Horsham service will not call at Earlswood and Salfords. A bus replacement will connect with this service at Redhill and provide the last connections for passengers to / from Earlswood and Salfords.

Amended service between London Victoria and Brighton on Sunday 2 October

 

Bridge and tunnel maintenance and track work is taking place between Preston Park and Brighton, closing some lines.

Southern overnight services until 08:30 between Brighton / Three Bridges and London Victoria are diverted into and out of London Bridge, with bus replacement services running between London Victoria and London Bridge, London Victoria and Clapham Junction and Clapham Junction and East Croydon.

Services between London Victoria and Sutton are reduced with diversions via Crystal Palace. London Bridge to East Croydon services via Tulse Hill are diverted to Crystal Palace.

Thameslink are running a reduced service of 2 trains per hour will run between Bedford and Haywards Heath.

Passengers are advised to use Southern services to travel between Haywards Heath and Brighton.

Track work is taking place between Streatham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction, closing all lines.

Southern services between London Victoria and Epsom /Dorking will not run. London Victoria to Sutton services via Selhurst are extended to Dorking.

Thameslink services between London Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction will not run. You can use other Thameslink services to travel between London Blackfriars and Streatham, also to / from Sutton via Wimbledon.

Buses will run between Streatham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction.

Buses replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton / Lewes.

Thameslink

On Saturday, the 22:40 Bedford to Brighton service will run non-stop from Haywards Heath to Brighton. A replacement bus will run from Haywards Heath to Brighton, service Burgess Hill and Hassocks.
The 23:10 and 23:40 Bedford to Three Bridges services will be re-timed approximately 10 minutes later from Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges.

On Sunday, services between Bedford and Three Bridges will not run. Passengers should use the rail replacement buses between Three Bridges and Brighton, operated by Southern.

London Overground trains will not run between Shepherds Bush and Willesden Junction. Passengers should use local buses between Shepherds Bush and Willesden Junction on any reasonable route.

Passengers should use London Midland trains between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central / Watford Junction or London Underground between London Victoria and Euston Square.

Buses replace trains between Purley and Caterham / Tattenham Corner until 08:45 on Sunday 16 October

 

Engineering work is taking place between South Croydon and Tattenham Corner / Caterham, closing all lines between Purley and Caterham / Tattenham Corner until approximately 08:45; after this all lines will reopen, however Caterham services will still be affected due to engineering work between Battersea Park and Streatham Common.

Until 08:45, buses will replace trains between Purley and Caterham / Tattenham Corner.

After 08:45, a normal service will run between Purley and Tattenham Corner, however trains between London Victoria and Caterham will start and terminate at Purley, not calling at stations between London Victoria and Purley.

Reduced service to and from London Victoria on Sunday 16 October

 

Engineering work is taking place between Battersea Park and Streatham Common meaning some lines between the stations will be closed. Because of this a reduced Southern and Gatwick Express service will run to and from London Victoria, with the following services affected:

  • A reduced service will run between London Victoria and Brighton / Epsom.
  • Trains between London Victoria and Sutton via Crystal Palace will start and terminate at Streatham Common , not calling at stations between London Victoria and Streatham Common.
  • A bus service is running between Balham and Streatham Hill to allow passengers to meet a connecting train service.
  • Trains between London Victoria and Caterham will start and terminate at Purley, not calling at stations between London Victoria and Purley.
  • Until 06:00 buses will replace trains between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport. After 06:00, a half hourly service will run between the stations, departing London Victoria on the hour and at 30 minutes past the hour, and departing Gatwick Airport at 20 and 50 minutes past the hour.

Southeastern services to and from London Victoria will not be affected by the engineering work.

Amended Southern services from Monday 17 to Friday 21 October

Monday to Thursday

22:04 and 23:04 London Bridge to Uckfield services will be replaced by a bus between Oxted and Uckfield.

22:54 and 23:23 London Victoria to East Grinstead services will be replaced by a bus between Oxted and East Grinstead.

Tuesday to Thursday

23:40 London Victoria to Horsham service will run fast between Purley and Horley. A bus will run between Purley and Horsham.

Tuesday to Friday

00:05 London Victoria to Eastbourne service will terminate at Three Bridges. A bus will operate at 01:01 from Three Bridges to Eastbourne calling at Haywards Heath, Lewes, Polegate, Hampden Park and Eastbourne.

01:00 and 04:00 London Victoria to Brighton services will terminate at Three Bridges.

02:05 Brighton to Worthing service will operate additionally, calling at Hove, Portslade, Southwick, Shoreham-by-Sea, Lancing and Worthing.

03:50 Brighton to London Victoria service will start from Three Bridges. A bus will operate between Brighton and Three Bridges departing at 03:55.

Buses will operate from Three Bridges to Brighton calling at Haywards Heath. Departures will be 01:00, 02:05 and 05:05.

Wednesday to Friday

00:14 London Victoria to Gatwick Airport service will run fast between Purley and Horley. A bus will run between Purley and Horley.

Amended service to and from Portsmouth from Saturday 22 October to Friday 28 October

Great Western Railway

From Saturday 22 October to Friday 28 October, buses replace trains between Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour.

On Saturday, and from Monday to Friday, trains between Portsmouth and Southampton Central will run between Swanwick and Southampton Central only, buses replace trains between Portsmouth Harbour and Swanwick. Trains between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour via Hedge End and Botley will run between London Waterloo and Eastleigh only. Buses will replace trains between Eastleigh and Portsmouth Harbour.

On Sunday buses replace trains between Portsmouth Harbour and Southampton Central. Buses will also replace trains between Eastleigh and Portsmouth Harbour via Hedge End and Botley.

Southern

On Saturday, and from Monday to Friday, buses replace trains between Havant and Swanwick. Southern customers may use South West Trains services to travel between Swanwick and Southampton Central.

On Sunday, buses replace trains between Havant and Southampton Central.

Buses replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton / Lewes 0n Sunday 23 October

 

Engineering work is taking place between Three Bridges and Preston Park / Lewes closing all lines. Read more about engineering work and why it is necessary.

Buses will replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton / Lewes.

Additionally the Thameslink service between Bedford and Three Bridges will not run and as a result of this only 2 trains per hour will run between Bedford and Three Bridges.

Gatwick Express trains until 06:00, are replaced by buses throughout. From 06:00, a half hourly service will operate as follows:

London Victoria to Gatwick Airport trains will depart at 00 and 30 minutes past each hour.

Gatwick Airport to London Victoria trains will depart at 20 and 50 minutes past each hour.

Engineering work is taking place between Balham and East Croydon, closing various lines.

Gatwick Express

Replacement road transport will operate between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport from 00:50 to 06:20. After 06:20 a half-hourly service will operate, departing as follows:

00 and 30 past each hour from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport.

20 and 50 past each hour from Gatwick Airport and London Victoria.

Southern

Until 06:30 on Sunday, trains will be diverted to start / terminate at London Bridge. Replacement road transport will operate between London Victoria and London Bridge / Clapham Junction and also between Clapham Junction and East Croydon.

After 06:30, a reduced service will operate between London Victoria and Brighton, Epsom.

Trains between London Bridge and Crystal Palace and between London Victoria and Sutton via Selhurst will not run. Buses replace trains between West Croydon and Sutton.

Trains between London Bridge and East Croydon via Peckham Rye will be diverted to run via Crystal Palace calling at intermediate stations.

Trains between London Victoria and Caterham will be replaced by buses between Purley and Caterham.

Trains between London Bridge and Tattenham Corner will be replaced by buses between Purley and Tattenham Corner.

Replacement road transport will operate between Tulse Hill and Streatham Common.

Passengers travelling between Streatham Common and West Croydon should travel via East Croydon and connect with Tramlink to West Croydon.

Road transport will operate at 23:30 from Streatham Common for Sutton, calling at Mitcham Eastfields, Mitcham Junction, Hackbridge, Carshalton and Sutton.

Road transport will also operate at 23:52 from Streatham Common for Horsham, calling at stations between Mitcham Eastfields and Horsham via Sutton.

After 21:50 each night, buses replace trains between Eastbourne and Hastings.

Tuesday to Friday

00:06 London Bridge to Caterham service will terminate at South Croydon. Road transport will operate between South Croydon and Caterham departing at 00:50.

Engineering work is taking place between Mitcham Eastfields / West Croydon and Epsom, closing all lines.

Buses replace trains between Mitcham Eastfields and Epsom / West Croydon and also between Sutton and Epsom Downs. Buses will be extended to run between Mitcham Eastfields and Streatham / Streatham Common for rail connections. A hourly train service will operate between Epsom and Horsham.

Passengers may use South West Trains between Epsom and Dorking.

Thameslink

Trains between Luton and Sutton via Wimbledon will not run between Wimbledon and Sutton via St Helier. Passengers may use local buses to complete your journey.

Trains between St Albans City / London Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction will not run, passengers should use alternative train services to / from Streatham and Southern buses between Streatham and Sutton.

As a result of this engineering work there will be no Gatwick Express or Southern trains between London Victoria and Clapham Junction.

Southeastern trains are not affected by this engineering work.

The Gatwick Express service will not run. Customers should use trains Southern trains between London Bridge and Gatwick Airport.

The following alterations to trains to / from London Bridge will apply:

The 01:00 and 04:00 London Victoria to Brighton services will be replaced by buses between Three Bridges and Brighton.

The 03:50 Brighton to London Victoria service will be replaced by a bus between between Brighton and Three Bridges.

Amended Great Western Railway service to and from London Paddington on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November

 

Engineering work is taking place at various locations between London Paddington, Reading, Didcot Parkway and Swindon closing some lines

High speed long distance services

High speed services will be completely revised throughout the weekend.

Trains between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads will run hourly. They will be diverted between Reading and Bath Spa, and will not call at Didcot Parkway, Swindon or Chippenham. An hourly train service will run between Swindon, Chippenham, Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads. Buses will run between Reading and Swindon, and between Didcot Parkway and Swindon.

Trains between London Paddington and South Wales will run hourly. On Saturday, they will be diverted between Reading and Swindon, not calling at Didcot Parkway, and will make an extra stop at Chippenham On Sunday they will be diverted between Reading and Bristol Parkway, and will not call at Didcot Parkway and Swindon but call additionally at Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads. Journey times will be extended.

Extra trains will run between London Paddington, Maidenhead, Reading and Didcot Parkway.

Trains will be retimed and have amended calling patterns between London Paddington and Exeter St Davids / Plymouth / Penzance.

Most trains from London Paddington to Worcester / Great Malvern / Hereford via Oxford will be retimed.

On Sunday, services between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will run between Swindon and Cheltenham Spa only. Passengers are advised to use alternative services. Buses replace some journeys.

Thames Valley services

Trains between London Paddington and Oxford will be retimed.

On Saturday trains to and from Greenford will operate an hourly frequency between Ealing Broadway and Greenford.

On Saturday no trains will call at Acton Main Line, you can use London Buses and London Underground to travel to and from this station.

As a consequence of the London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads / South Wales services being diverted, most services between Reading and Newbury / Bedwyn will be retimed or not call at all stations.

All weekend, trains will not call at Burnham and Taplow (Taplow is closed as normal on Sunday from 02:00. Road transport will operate between Slough and Burnham / Taplow.

On Sunday until approximately 07:00, London Paddington to Twyford trains will be replaced by buses between London Paddington / Hayes & Harlington and Twyford.

Please depart Gatwick Airport and Redhill 15 minutes earlier than normal to ensure you meet your train connection at Reigate.

Southern trains will be diverted between Purley and Horley, and will be unable to call at Coulsdon South, Merstham, Redhill and Earlswood. Buses will run between Purley and Horley to provide connections for customers going to and from the stations without a train service.
