Service alterations

Amended weekday Southern and Gatwick Express services until further notice

In order to give you more certainty for your journey and enable you to better plan, Southern and Gatwick Express have implemented an amended timetable on Mondays to Fridays. They plan to operate the revised timetable until train crew availability returns to normal.

To check your journey for travel up to and including Friday 2 September, please use the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.

The key changes are

  • Limited peak time service on the West London route (Clapham Junction - Watford Junction)
  • Buses replace most trains between Lewes and Seaford
  • Revised services on many other routes

If your journey is delayed by more than 30 minutes during the amended timetable, you will be able to claim compensation against trains cancelled in advance or against delays experienced on the day.

Possible strike action affecting Southern services on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September

Conductors and station staff in the RMT union are planning to strike.

  • Wednesday 7 September - strike by station staff and conductors
  • Thursday 8 September - strike by conductors

If strike action does go ahead, there will be extensive alteration to services for the entirety of both days.

Wednesday 7 September

It is likely that the strike by station staff will have a significant effect on train services as they perform train dispatch at some stations. Southern do not expect to be able to offer the same level of service that they have on other strike dates. Some ticket offices may also be closed.

Thursday 8 September

There will be no service on some routes and only a limited service on others. Last trains on certain routes will be as early as 16:30.

Services on the morning of Friday 9 September may also be disrupted.

Plans are currently being finalised and we will update this page with the latest information as soon as it is available.

If strike action does go ahead, passengers with Anytime, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak and also Advance tickets (if bought up to 18:00 the night before for a specific train) may use the following services:

London Overground services between:

  • West Croydon / Crystal Palace / Peckham Rye and Canada Water
  • Clapham Junction and Watford Junction via Willesden Junction
  • Watford Junction and London Euston

London Underground services between:

  • Canada Water and London Bridge
  • Balham and London Victoria / London Bridge / London Euston (Excludes intermediate stations)
  • London Victoria and London Blackfriars
  • London Victoria and London Euston


Tramlink
and London Buses via any reasonable route

Tickets dated for travel on Wednesday 7 or Thursday 8 September can be used on Tuesday 6 or Friday 9 September.

Disruption between New Cross Gate and West Croydon / Crystal Palace expected until 19:00

Speed restrictions have been imposed between New Cross Gate and Forest Hill and also a signalling problem at West Croydon are causing disruption to journeys between New Cross Gate and West Croydon / Crystal Palace. This is expected to continue until 19:00.

The following alterations will apply:

London Overground services may be delayed by up to 10 minutes or start / terminate Surrey Quays and are also delayed by up to 20 minutes between Sydenham and West Croydon.

Southern services may not call at West Croydon and divert to East Croydon. Some services may not call at Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill, passengers for these stations are advised to change at Sydenham and board a train back to these stations.

Thameslink services may be delayed by up to 10 minutes.

Current delays, cancellations and train formation updates

Alterations to services between New Cross Gate and Forest Hill

Due to a speed restriction over defective track between New Cross Gate and Forest Hill trains have to run at reduced speed on some lines.
Impact:
Train services running through these stations may be running non stop. Some stations between New Cross Gate and Sydenham will not be served. Disruption is expected until 19:00 29/08.
Customer Advice:
Network Rail are now on site inspecting the reported track defect and will be providing us with updates. Trains will still have to run at reduced speed which has resulted in some trains not stopping at their normal stations. Trains from London Bridge to London Victoria will not be calling at Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill and Trains from London Bridge to Caterham will not be calling at Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill. Customers for these stations are advised to change at Sydenham and board a train back to Forest Hill, Honor Oak Park and Brockley.

Cancellations to services at West Croydon

Following a points failure at West Croydon all lines have now reopened.
Impact:
Train services running through this station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 15 mins. Disruption is expected until 19:00 29/08.
Customer Advice:
The fault has now been rectified and services will be able to run through West Croydon. For those customers who have been diverted to East Croydon, Tramlink will accept Southern Rail tickets between East and West Croydon until 19:30 this evening.

Buses replace trains between Streatham and Epsom (via Streatham Common, Mitcham Eastfields and Sutton), also between West Croydon and (Epsom Downs via Wallington).

On Saturday and Monday tickets will be accepted on South West Trains between Epsom and Dorking.

Thameslink

Trains between St Albans City / London Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction will not run, passengers should use alternative train services to / from Streatham and Southern buses between Streatham and Sutton.

The fire near the track near Harrow & Wealdstone has been extinguished and lines have reopened. Trains between Watford Junction and London Euston are now able to run normally.
