Major improvement work affecting South West Trains until Monday 28 August

Until Monday 28 August at London Waterloo, platforms 1-10 will be closed so work can start to extend platforms for longer trains, providing more space for more customers.

Although the number of customers travelling in August is lower than any other time of the year, customers should expect:

  • Severe disruption
  • Extremely busy trains
  • Queues at many stations
  • Some journey times will be extended.

The following stations will be closed for some or all of the time:

  • Chessington South
  • Chessington North
  • Earlsfield (weekdays only until 10:00 and between 16:30 and 19:30)
  • Malden Manor
  • Norbiton
  • Queenstown Road
  • Tolworth
  • Vauxhall (will be partially closed as platforms 7 and 8 will be closed and a large number of trains will no longer call there)

For more information, including travel advice, ticket acceptance and additional information, please visit the South West Trains website.

If you do have to travel during this time, you are strongly advised to plan ahead and avoid the following times:

  • Vauxhall - 07:30 to 08:45
  • Clapham Junction - 06:45 to 09:30
  • Surbiton - 07:30 - 09:00
  • London Waterloo - 17:00 to 18:45
  • Vauxhall - 17:30 to 18:30
  • Clapham Junction - 17:00 - 19:30
  • Wimbledon - 17:00 to 19:00

August Bank Holiday weekend

From Friday 25 to Monday 28 August, there will be additional engineering work at London Waterloo and platforms 10 to 14 will be closed. This will further reduce the number of trains that will run right across the network, but the impact will be more significant closer to London.

There will be changes to your journeys but South West Trains and Network Rail are doing everything possible to reduce the inconvenience and make your journey as smooth as possible. This will include:

  • Running longer trains throughout the day to provide more space and help you travel outside of the busiest times
  • Temporarily open platforms 20 to 24 (the former London Waterloo International Terminal) to reduce some of the impact of closing platforms 1 to 9
  • Work round the clock to finish the works as quickly as possible

Customer Advice:

  • Consider travelling from a different station or via an alternative route where there may be a more frequent service.
  • Travel slightly earlier or later than normal. The busiest trains arrive into London between 08:00 and 09:00 and leave London between 17.30 and 18:30.
  • If you are able to do so, you might want to consider working from home or taking a holiday during some or all of this time.

Because fewer South West Trains will be running throughout this period, some Southern and Thameslink services are expected to be busier. You can find more information on this here.

Plan ahead if you're travelling with Southern or Thameslink this August

Network Rail are carrying out major improvement work at London Waterloo. As a result of this, there will be a severely reduced South West Trains service on many routes. This will increase passenger numbers on many Southern and Thameslink routes and may change the route we recommend you take for your journey. If possible, you are advised to avoid travelling at peak times and to allow longer for your journey.

Southern services from Clapham Junction to London Victoria during the evening peak.
There will be a reduced number of services from Clapham Junction to London Victoria between 16:00 and 20:00 on weekdays as certain services will not call at Clapham Junction to prevent overcrowding at the station. In general, only Mainline services (those that normally run non-stop between East Croydon and Clapham Junction) will be affected and Metro services will call as normal.

Many Southern and Thameslink services will be busier
With the significant reduction in South West Trains services. The following routes are expected to be considerably busier than usual as passengers who usually use London Waterloo seek alternative routes:

  • Thameslink or Southern services between Wimbledon and London via Tulse Hill
  • Southern services between Southampton and Portsmouth to London
  • Southern services between Dorking / Guildford and London via Epsom / Sutton

All Southern and Thameslink services to and from London are expected to be busier than usual. You are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to avoid travelling at peak times where possible. Queuing systems will be in place at some locations.

Clapham Junction station
It may be necessary to restrict access at Clapham Junction and you may have to queue to enter the station or to board connecting services. You are strongly advised to travel outside peak times from this station. If interchanging please consider alternative routes.

You are strongly advised to avoid interchanging at Clapham Junction. South West Trains services at this station will be very limited so journeys may be considerably extended. Queuing systems are expected to be in place even if you aren't interchanging with South West Trains services.

There are alternative routes between most stations that avoid Clapham Junction. Use the National Rail journey planner as detailed below to plan journeys to avoid changing at Clapham Junction.

Alternative routes if you normally change at Clapham Junction for services to London Waterloo (and vice versa)
Please consider travelling on services to London Bridge and changing for Southeastern services to/from Waterloo East*. Alternatively, use Thameslink services to Blackfriars which is a short walk from London Bridge. *Please note that there will be no Southeastern service at London Bridge, Cannon Street, Waterloo East or Charing Cross from 26 August until 2 September due to major route improvement work.

Alternative routes if you normally change at Clapham Junction for South West Trains services away from London or for London Overground services
Services on all South West Trains routes from Clapham Junction (including those away from London) will be reduced and interchange with London Overground services at Clapham Junction will take longer.

There are alternative routes between most stations that avoid Clapham Junction. Use the National Rail journey planner as detailed below to plan journeys to avoid changing at Clapham Junction.
