Southern's 2019 highlights

In 2019, we have celebrated the communities we serve, delivered better ways to pay, and helped young people into employment.

Improved ticketing across the route

The Key Smartcard can now be used from Brighton, beyond Bexhill on the East Coastway route to Ashford International via Hastings.

Brighton MainLine upgrade success

Essential railway upgrade work has taken place between Brighton and Lewes, as well as, part of the Brighton Mainline Upgrade, planned disruption for 9-days between Brighton and Three Bridges – which won the Customer Excellence Award at the 2019 National Rail Awards.

Southern ‘Pride’

Southern once again supported Brighton Pride – not just by adding extra services to cater for those travelling to and from the event, but this year we had our first float in the parade to celebrate our thriving LGBT+ community. See Instagram highlights here.

Supporting young people across our network

This year our ‘Get into Railways’ programme, delivered in partnership with The Prince’s Trust, saw 14 young people employed across Southern – as part of our commitments to having a diverse workforce that reflects the communities in which we work, helping young people along our route into employment and generating social value across the London and the South East. See more information here.

Keeping our communities at the heart of our business

We support community lines and 80 station partnerships across our Southern route – delivering upgraded, vibrant local station environments. Nine new partnerships were formed this year. Find out more here.

Corporate and social responsibility

We believe in doing business in a responsible way – serving our passengers and benefiting the communities around our stations.
