Why was Hastings Castle built?

Upon the arrival of William of Normandy (AKA William the Conqueror) in England, he immediately ordered the building of Hastings Castle. The castle offered accommodation and a place to prepare for battle. Not long after Hastings Castle was constructed, William soundly defeated King Harold in the field in a showdown now known as the Battle of Hastings.
