4 interesting facts about Arundel

2 minute read

Did you know Arundel Castle has often been used as a filming location? Here are four interesting things to know about this West Sussex gem

The historic castle is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of things to do in Arundel, but what else can you find there? Turns out this market town of 3500 inhabitants offers more things to discover than you would imagine.

1. Arundel Castle and gardens in the movies

Did you know the medieval Arundel Castle has often been used as a filming location? It doubled for Windsor Castle in films like The Madness of King George, Young Victoria and featured in an episode of Doctor Who. It was even used as the seat of the German High Command in the 2017 film Wonder Woman.

The Arundel Castle Gardens are just as impressive as the castle itself. You probably wouldn’t guess that a part of it, the Collector Earl's Garden, used to be a car park! Thankfully it was redeveloped to its current splendour in 2008.

2. Arundel Cathedral or Notre Dame?

Although it looks a bit like the medieval Notre Dame, Arundel Cathedral was actually built in the 1800s. It opened in 1873 after only five years of construction. Thankfully it didn’t take as long to build as the cathedral in Paris with its 182 years – had it taken as long, Arundel Cathedral would have been in construction until 2051…

3. Rare birds at WWT Arundel

Keen to see some rare wildlife? Then head to the WWT Arundel centre. This Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust centre boasts an impressive list of residents, like the red-beaked Dalmatian pelican, and the blue duck. Did you know the WWT Arundel centre has the only breeding population of blue ducks outside of New Zealand?
