There’s more to Eastbourne than the beach, like a leading art gallery, a historic pier and Hollywood’s favourite filming spot. Here are our top tips for a day out in this coastal gem.
Eastbourne beach is probably what comes to mind when you think of a day out in this East Sussex town, but did you know there’s an important art gallery here and a place that Hollywood regularly uses as a movie location? Here are 4 inspiring tips for your day trip and fun facts.
1. Eastbourne Pier
Nothing beats a day out on Eastbourne beach, especially since it’s home to the historic Eastbourne Pier. It opened already back in 1872, and the preserved Victorian style makes it popular to feature in movies, like in 2010 thriller Brighton Rock and upcoming drama Vindication Swim. Visit the Victorian Tea Rooms to step back in time and enjoy Afternoon Tea in Eastbourne.
2. Seven Sisters in Eastbourne
Speaking of movies, did you know the Seven Sisters often feature on the silver screen? Go on one of our walking trails along the Eastbourne cliffs, and you’ll get why Hollywood comes here. Spot them in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Pearl Harbor, The Hitman’s Bodyguard or Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. In the James Bond flick The Living Daylights, a spy parachutes from a car in Gibraltar, but it was filmed at Beachy Head!
3. Eastbourne Marina
Were you aware Europe’s largest man-made marina is in Eastbourne? Head down to the Sovereign Harbour, also simply known as Eastbourne Marina, and stroll around the impressive yachts and motor boats. Or why not relax at one of Eastbourne Harbour’s waterfront cafes, restaurants or shops.
4. Contemporary art and family fun
Still not sure what to do in Eastbourne? Visit the impressive Towner Art Gallery on the Coastal Culture Trail for contemporary art, head to the Treasure Island Adventure Park for some family fun, or enjoy the views from the Eastbourne Wheel. And don’t forget to go for some fish and chips in one of many Eastbourne restaurants.
