Looking for a countryside escape from London without needing a car?

Pulborough and Dorking offer a perfect mix of outdoor activities and indulgent experiences, all easily accessible by train.

Recently, I spent a day exploring these charming locales, and here’s how it went.

Morning in Pulborough: The Wild Art Trail

I started my journey at London Victoria, hopping on a train to Pulborough. In just over 75 minutes you can escape the City for the Sussex countryside. Once I arrived, I was ready to embark on the Wild Art Trail. Conveniently beginning right at the train station, this trail is perfect for those who want to avoid getting lost and dive straight into nature.

As I strolled along the trail, I came across a series of sketches illustrating a bird’s approach. Each drawing invited a closer look, turning a simple walk into a fun scavenger hunt. It was enjoyable to spot each sketch while taking in the serene landscapes. This activity is perfect for kids, who would love the challenge of finding each drawing, enhancing their observation skills and appreciation for nature and art.

In addition to the sketches, the trail features several sculptural works scattered throughout, adding an artistic touch to the experience. These sculptures, made from various materials, offer interesting points of interest and conversation. Walking this trail provides a refreshing break from everyday stress, allowing you to relax and enjoy the creative environment.

For families, the trail offers a mix of outdoor adventure and cultural enrichment. Children can learn about art and nature, while parents can unwind in a peaceful setting. It's a refreshing way to spend time together, making it a great destination for anyone looking to escape the daily grind.

After all that walking, I was hungry. On my way back to the station, I stopped at Pulbrew, a local café, for a quick bite. The snack was refreshing and gave me the energy I needed to continue my journey.

I then followed the trail back to the station, feeling satisfied with my morning adventure and eager for my next stop: Dorking.

The journey from Pulborough to Dorking took less than an hour, making it a perfect second stop for your countryside escape.

Afternoon in Dorking: Wine and Relaxation at Denbies

Arriving in Dorking, I was excited to continue my countryside journey with a more adult activity: visiting a wine estate. Denbies Wine Estate is just a 20-minute walk from Dorking train station, making it an easy and convenient choice.

Once I arrived at the estate, I had about an hour before my train tour began. I decided to grab a latte from the café and relax in the outdoor seating area.

It was brilliant to sit back and enjoy a hot cup of coffee while soaking in the stunning views around me. The tranquillity of the vineyard was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of London, and I felt a deep sense of relaxation.

Soon enough, it was time for my tour!

I opted for the outdoor train tour with a glass of sparkling wine.

We boarded a Land Rover with multiple open-air cars attached and headed up to the highest points of the vineyard.

The views on the way were spectacular. The lush, green landscape, especially vibrant after the summer rains, looked stunning under the clear blue sky. I felt a wave of gratitude for being able to witness such natural beauty on such a perfect day.

The tour lasted 50 minutes, with the first half featuring commentary about the vineyard and its history.

There were multiple opportunities to stop for pictures before being served our glasses of sparkling brut at the top.

The wine was delicious, and the tour guide mentioned that English sparkling wine is gaining recognition from French champagne makers like Moët, who have even bought land in the Downs.

I felt a sense of pride in the quality of English wines and was thrilled to learn about their growing reputation.

The second half of the tour was peaceful, with no commentary, allowing us to enjoy our wine and the beautiful scenery in silence. I relished this quiet time, feeling deeply relaxed and content.

Back at the estate, we were introduced to Denbies' popular orange wine, a white wine produced like a red. Each bottle is hand-dipped in orange wax, making it a stunning gift. The guide shared an amusing anecdote about their last harvest, which unexpectedly produced 9,000 bottles. Since each needed to be hand-dipped, they had to stop mentioning it on the tour because the workers couldn’t dip them fast enough!

We were lucky to visit when all the bottles were ready, so I made sure to try some when we got back to the estate. The orange wine was absolutely lovely, with a unique flavour perfect for summer. I bought a bottle to take home, feeling pleased with my purchase.

Back to London: Reflecting on a Perfect Day

After my tour and wine tasting, I walked back to Dorking train station and was back in London within an hour. As I reflected on my day, I felt grateful for the perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, all achievable in a single day.

Pulborough and Dorking offered a wonderful contrast between an active, family-friendly morning and a luxurious, relaxing afternoon. I loved the balance of the day, starting with the playful exploration of the Wild Art Trail and ending with the indulgent experience of a wine tour. Whether you’re looking for a nature-filled adventure or a taste of local wine, these countryside gems are just a train ride away, making for a brilliant day out.
