Bonfire nights

Changes to train times and services during Bonfire Night events at Lewes and Rye.

Lewes Bonfire

Wednesday 5 November

Bonfire night

As in previous years on Lewes Bonfire Night, trains will not be stopping at Lewes or the surrounding stations of Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Southease from 17:00 until the start of service the following day.

November 5 once again falls on a weekday and commuters to London are advised that the last trains back from Victoria to these stations will leave at 15.24 and 15.54.

The train timetable changes are introduced every year at the request of a multi-agency group to limit the numbers attending the event in the interests of public safety.

Lewes Bonfire attracts tens of thousands of people to the town, prompting concerns about overcrowding in the narrow streets. Combined with significant amounts of fireworks, this presents a unique challenge.

The multi-agency group that includes the emergency services, local authorities and public transport companies, is asking people to attend fireworks events closer to home and not travel to Lewes - find out more.

As in previous years, for reasons of public safety, Rye railway station will be closed from 15:00 on the day of the Rye Bonfire (Saturday 15 November) until the start of service the next day (Sunday 16 November).

Trains will run through and not call at Rye.

The change has the backing of the Bonfire Society and police, who say it will prevent anti-social behaviour.

The Southern train service cannot accommodate the number of people expected to visit the town. There would be a very real risk that visitors would be stranded trying to get home as they would not be able to board the last train.

As with many other bonfire activities across the region, the advice is for people to attend their local events rather than travelling further afield.
