Crystal Palace closure

What’s happening?

Network Rail are undertaking major track upgrade at Crystal Palace this August, replacing five sets of switches and crossings, the moveable rails that allow trains to transfer between lines.

This work will provide a more reliable service with fewer delays.

To allow this work to take place, the following changes to services will take place:

From Saturday 24 August to Sunday 1 September 2024

On Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday: 

  • No trains will run between Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction / London Bridge (via Sydenham / New Cross Gate)
  • London Bridge to Beckenham Junction trains will not run on any part of their route
  • London Victoria to London Bridge and London Victoria to West Croydon trains will only run between London Victoria and Streatham Hill

On Tuesday to Friday: 

  • No trains will run between Streatham Hill and Crystal Palace / Norwood Junction
  • London Bridge to Beckenham Junction trains will not run on any part of their route
  • London Victoria to London Bridge trains will only run between London Victoria and Streatham Hill and a separate service will run between Crystal Palace and London Bridge (via Sydenham / New Cross Gate) 
  • London Victoria to West Croydon trains will only run between London Victoria and Streatham Hill, and only between approximately 07:00 and 09:00 and between approximately 16:00 and 18:00

The dates of the closure have been timed to take place at the same time as the summer school holidays, when fewer people are generally travelling.

If you use these sections of the network, please plan ahead as you will need to alter your journey during the closure.

Can I use my rail ticket on alternative routes?

We've got arrangements in place so that paper rail tickets will be accepted on the following alternatives:

Saturday and Monday to Friday:

  • London Buses: 109, 157, 196, 201, 249, 255, 315, 322, 417, 432, 450, 468 between Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction / West Croydon
  • London Trams: between East Croydon and Beckenham Junction
  • London Underground: between London Bridge and Canada Water (Jubilee Line)
  • London Overground: between Canada Water and West Croydon

Sunday:

  • London Buses: 109, 157, 196, (on Sunday 24 August only)
  • London Buses: 201, 249, 255, 315, 322, 417, 432, 450, 468 between Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction / West Croydon
  • London Underground: between London Bridge and Canada Water (Jubilee Line)
  • London Overground: between Canada Water and Sydenham / Crystal Palace / West Croydon

Further closure in autumn 2024

Please note, there will be a further closure of lines in the same areas later this year, from Saturday 26 October to Friday 1 November. This is for separate works to upgrade the signalling.
