No step-free access at Sutton
Monday 16 June to late-September 2025
There will be no lift access to or from the platforms at Sutton station from Monday 16 June until late-September.
This is while Network Rail replaces all of the lifts to improve their long-term reliability.
The work is being carried out on all the lifts at the same time to reduce the overall length of disruption. You can find out more about the work Network Rail is carrying out on their website here.
How will this affect my journey?
If you need lift access to, from or between the platforms and cannot use stairs you will not be able to use Sutton station while this work is taking place.
Instead, you will need to use an alternative local station with step-free access such as Carshalton or Cheam. This will depend on where you are travelling to or from and the route you take.
If required, accessible local TfL buses provide connections to and from alternative stations that provide step-free access.
You may find it easier and quicker to adapt your journey and travel directly to or from one of the local alternative stations rather than travelling via Sutton.
If you would normally prefer to use the lifts, but can use stairs with support, there will be additional staff available at Sutton to provide assistance.
For parents with pushchairs, please note children will need to be removed from pushchairs and carried. Staff can help with empty pushchairs up and down stairs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to travel to Sutton for assisted travel?
No, in many cases it will be faster to travel directly to or from the alternative station suggested above. Both Carshalton and Cheam stations have staff available to help you.
If required, we can organise an accessible taxi to/from Sutton. However, due to a limited number of accessible taxi vehicles in the area, there may be long waits. TfL buses in the Sutton area are step-free and are likely to provide a faster overall journey time. To plan your journey by local bus please visit tfl.gov.uk
Is ticket acceptance in place on local buses?
No, however, many journeys in the Sutton area are made using Oyster cards / Contactless, so are subject to capping, or with a Freedom Pass.
As a result, we do not expect many customers to incur additional costs. However, if you do incur additional travel costs, please contact our Customer Relations team, referencing the Sutton lift scheme.
Why are all the lifts at Sutton station being replaced at the same time?
With our partners at Network Rail, we evaluated this scheme, where the lifts are all replaced at the same time in a period of approximately twelve weeks, against an alternative scheme where lifts were replaced one by one over a period of approximately nine months.
We opted for simultaneous replacement because it delivered benefits to customers faster. In addition, the layout of Sutton station’s platforms would mean that the benefit of partial lift availability would be limited. This is because it would only be possible to travel in one direction and on limited routes, depending on which of the three lifts were available.
