Major Network Rail engineering work will be taking place in the Lewes area from Thursday 7 March to Sunday 10 March 2019
How this affects you
For four days, from Thursday 7 March to Sunday 10 March, there are no trains between the following stations:
- Wivelsfield - Lewes
- Falmer - Lewes
- Seaford - Lewes
- Polegate - Lewes
- Brighton - Falmer: A shuttle train will be replacing normal service, running every 40 minutes
During this time, buses will replace trains.

Replacement bus routes
- A stopping bus service between Brighton and Seaford calling at London Road, Moulescoombe, Falmer, Lewes, Southease, Newhaven Town, Newhaven Harbour, Newhaven Town and Bishopstone
- A stopping bus service between Brighton and Polegate calling at Lewes
- A limited bus service between Haywards Heath to Polegate, calling at Cooksbridge and Lewes
- A stopping bus service between Haywards Heath and Lewes calling at Plumpton
- A limited stopping bus service between Lewes and Polegate calling at Glynde and Berwick
- A bus service between Polegate and East Grinstead
We recommend to travel outside of peak times where possible and allow more time for your journey. Some stations and alternative routes will be busier than usual. Other closures will take place at weekends. Always check before you travel.
Car Parks
During these works we will be using part of Polegate car park for buses (the car park will be partially closed); the Lewes forecourt; Haywards Heath forecourt and East Grinstead’s pick up and put down area. There will be traffic management in place for Lewes and Haywards Heath.
Those with car park season tickets to stations that have no trains will be able to use alternative car parks including Three Bridges, Haywards Heath and Brighton. We expect Haywards Heath and Polegate’s car parks to be especially busy.
Where your tickets will be accepted
Your tickets will be accepted from alternative Southern stations and on the following local bus services:
- 28 and 29 (Lewes to Brighton)
- 12 (Brighton to Eastbourne)
- 25 (University Bus to Falmer)
Why are there closures?
Network Rail are replacing old signalling equipment between Lewes and Seaford and replacing it with modern, more reliable technology as part of a multi-million-pound upgrade.
