Major works at Hove

Network Rail will carry out major engineering works between Hove and Brighton in September and October 2021.

Why is this happening?

The works are planned to stabilise a railway cutting in Hove and prevent delays caused by landslips, which in recent years have caused significant delays to passengers.

To stabilise the cutting and protect the railway from rockfall Network Rail will be installing 1012 rock bolts into ground during the blockade. These bolts will hold rock netting in place that will catch loose rocks and in the areas where required hold the ground together.

What does this mean for my journey?

Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September

  • Buses will replace trains between Brighton and Littlehampton
  • Tickets will be accepted on Brighton & Hove Buses routes 2, 6, 7, 46 and 49 between Shoreham, Portslade, Hove and Brighton (Brighton station / Churchill Square)

From Monday 20 September until Friday 1 October

  • No trains will run directly between Brighton and Hove/stations towards Littlehampton
  • Trains will run to an amended timetable between Preston Park and Littlehampton and between Littlehampton and Portsmouth Harbour/Southampton Central
  • Southern customers will need to change train at Preston Park to travel to/from Brighton
  • Customers travelling between Portsmouth/Southampton and Brighton will need to change trains at Littlehampton and Preston Park
  • Preston Park station will be a lot busier than usual during this period. At peak times access to the station may be restricted to avoid overcrowding
  • Great Western Railway services to and from Brighton will end at Worthing on weekdays or Portsmouth Harbour at weekends
  • Tickets will be accepted on Brighton & Hove Buses routes 2, 6, 7, 46 and 49 between Shoreham, Portslade, Hove and Brighton (Brighton station / Churchill Square)
  • Trains will not be shown correctly in journey planners until around a week before the changes take place
