How keyGo works

Got a key smartcard? With keyGo you can add money to your key account in advance and you’ll automatically be charged the best day fare for your travel.

You’ll always be charged the best fare you could have got if you’d bought your ticket at the station to travel straight away. When your balance gets low, it will automatically top up. You can use keyGo for bus and train travel in selected areas on the Southern network.

Save time

No need to queue at a ticket machine or station office – keyGo automatically charges you the right fare for your journey.

Use on buses and trains

Use keyGo to travel on Metrobus and Brighton & Hove buses.

Best day fare

Travel as much as you like – keyGo will automatically charge you the best fare from Peak, Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak according to the journeys you made that day.

Setting up keyGo

  • First, you need to have The Key Smartcard. Then you can sign up for keyGo
  • Once you’ve signed up, £25 will be taken from the bank card you nominate
  • If your account balance drops below £5, it will automatically be topped up with £25 using your nominated payment card
  • To activate keyGo, touch in with your key at a Southern train station. You’ll need to wait at least 2 hours after signing up. Check the keyGo map for details
  • You can only activate keyGo at a Southern train station, not on a bus. But once it’s activated you can use it to travel on trains and buses
  • You can top up your keyGo balance with extra credit at local retailers with Payzone

Payzone with KeyGo

You can use Payzone to add credit to your keyGo account at local retailers. Find a Payzone retailer here

To top up at a Payzone location, you must first register and have keyGo activated on your key card. You must still have a valid payment card linked to your keyGo account even if you use Payzone to top up.

KeyGo tips

You need to allow 3 minutes between touching out at a train station and touching in on a bus.

To make sure you always pay the right fare, always touch in and out on the yellow card reader at train station ticket barriers. And always touch in when you’re getting on a bus.
