D-Day 80th Anniversary Commemorations

Portsmouth holds a significant place in history as a departure point for many soldiers during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. In 2024, the city was at the heart of the 80th anniversary commemorations of this pivotal World War II operation. From large-scale events on Southsea Common to memorial services and beacon lighting ceremonies, Portsmouth hosted a series of tributes to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in D-Day.

Getting to Portsmouth

Our direct trains from London Victoria will get you to Portsmouth in about two hours. Or if you’re coming from Brighton, you can enjoy the direct service on the Coastway West line in an hour and 20 minutes.

We serve both Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth & Southsea stations. If you’re headed to the Historic Dockyard, Gunwharf Quays shopping or the Spinnaker Tower, you’ll want Portsmouth Harbour Station. For St. John’s Cathedral, the Guildhall and the City Centre, the best stop is Portsmouth & Southsea.
