Service alterations

Amended weekday Southern and Gatwick Express services until further notice

In order to give you more certainty for your journey and enable you to better plan, Southern and Gatwick Express have implemented an amended timetable on Mondays to Fridays. They plan to operate the revised timetable until train crew availability returns to normal.

To check your journey for travel up to and including Friday 2 September, please use the National Rail Enquiries real-time Journey Planner.

The timetables, details of the routes affected, and alternative travel options are available here.

The key changes are

  • Limited peak time service on the West London route (Clapham Junction - Watford Junction)
  • Buses replace most trains between Lewes and Seaford
  • Revised services on many other routes

A map showing the alterations is available here.

If your journey is delayed by more than 30 minutes during the amended timetable, you will be able to claim compensation against trains cancelled in advance or against delays experienced on the day.

Current delays, cancellations and train formation updates

Cancellations to services via Mitcham Eastfields

Following a fault with the signalling system at Mitcham Eastfields the southbound line is now open.
Impact:
Train services via Mitcham Eastfields may be cancelled, delayed by up to 10 mins or diverted. Disruption is expected until 15:00 25/08.
Customer Advice:
Thameslink are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.
Transport For London - London Buses are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.
Additional Information:
We are sorry for the delay to your journey today.
-
Network Rail, who own and maintain the signalling and track, are attending the reported signalling fault and will be providing updates to us. They are expected to be on site soon and we will then provide further information about the problem.
-
Unfortunately there is sometimes no alternative to cancelling some trains and altering the stopping patterns of others to reduce the time it takes to get everything back on schedule.
Even after we've resolved the problem, trains may be disrupted for several hours afterwards.
This happens in part because much of the rail network runs close to capacity, so there's very little opportunity to squeeze trains closer together and make up time. Delays also leave trains and train crew in the wrong place at the wrong time, so return and onward journeys are affected too.
-
Most of the problems that occur on the rail network are fixed quickly but, particularly on busy routes where trains are tightly scheduled, even something as simple as a blown fuse can cause knock-on delays that continue for hours afterwards. These delays don't only affect the route where the problem was - they can also affect any connecting routes.
Delays leave trains, drivers and crews in the wrong place at the wrong time, so return journeys are likely to be affected too.
