What we look for
Southern is part of the Govia Thameslink Railway, the UK’s largest train operating company. Across all our brands we’re committed to working together as a team to deliver a better railway.
We want to build an enthusiastic, customer-centred organisation. So we’re looking for team members who value honesty and safety, people who are full of new ideas and who want to deliver a positive impact every day.

Customer service opportunities
With a network that spans 157 stations and 2322 daily trains, it takes a lot of teamwork to provide a positive experience for our customers.
Our Platform, Gateline, Salespoint Assistants and Customer Experience Managers are the main points of customer support. The experience they gain is very valuable – many current Station Managers started in one of these roles.
Our train crews and security teams are the second main pillar of support. That’s why we look for a customer-service mindset in our Train Drivers, Conductors, Revenue Protection and Rail Neighbourhood teams.
Service support roles
The work done by our Train Planning, Performance, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering teams is essential in running a reliable service. Our Train Carers are also a big part of this, and their work in preparing trains for service has earned them nationally recognised awards for cleanliness.
We also look to hire for Finance, HR, Marketing, Procurement, Project Management, Safety, Training and Development roles. For these management opportunities, we’re looking for team members who can support our staff with the tools they need to perform at the highest level.
Opportunities for graduates
In 2016, we launched a new graduate scheme to invest in the future of our business. We are looking for driven, hard-working, determined graduates to join and train as the leaders of the future.
Our programme aims to give graduates full exposure to all elements of the business, to ensure both full understanding and allow the graduates to find a role they’d truly enjoy. We want all members of this scheme to be creative and look for ways to continuously improve the business and the passenger experience, at all levels.
Applications for the 2016 scheme have already closed. But you can learn more about our programme – and check for 2017 scheme details – at the Gradvert website.
