Historical Facts
This impressive piece of architecture dates all the way back to the 11th century. Large parts of the building were rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, as the castle walls were badly damaged during the English Civil War. Arundel Castle was built on the orders of William the Conqueror in an attempt to guard the area against the French invasion and to protect the River Arun.
The first Earl of the castle was Roger de Montgomery. However, several Kings have owned Arundel Castle over the years – including Henry I, Henry II and Richard I. The Dukes of Norfolk have lived there for over 800 years, and their bodies are still buried within the 14th century Fitzalan Chapel.

The Castle Gardens
Existing for almost 1000 years, the stunning gardens of Arundel Castle have been open to the public since 1854 and truly are a wonder to behold. These majestic grounds can be roamed at your leisure, or you can even book a guided tour if you want to know more on the full history of the castle.
Soak up the sweet scents of the array of colourful flower displays, take shelter in the warmth of the garden greenhouses or simply take a leisurely stroll, enjoying the picture-perfect view of the river Arun.

Arundel Castle opening times vary depending on which area of the attraction you wish to enter. The gardens are usually open from 10am-5pm, while the keep (11am-4.30pm) and the rooms (12pm-5pm) are available to visit for slightly shorter periods, but make sure to check before you visit.
