Reclaiming narratives by rail

Black History Month

Throughout UK Black History Month 2024, we’ve been reflecting, celebrating and elevating Black history, arts and culture across our network – you’ll have seen it across our TikTok, Instagram and Facebook socials, and on this webpage you’ll find a summary of all the activity, with travel tips and inspiration for you to join us Reclaiming Narratives by Rail all year round.

Whether it’s a gallery in the capital to indulge yourself in stunning art, an educative exhibition or event, or cool cuisine to connect you to Black excellence across London and the South, we’ve got you covered.

We ended a month of celebrations with a special live event at the UK’s first majority Black female-owned shopping arcade Peckham Palms, home to the award-winning, critically acclaimed The Flygerians restaurant. Worst House on the Street and A Place In The Sun presenter and TV trailblazer Scarlette Douglas moderated a live panel session featuring Flygerians founders entrepreneurs Jess and Jo Edun, and founder members of the GTR Race Equality Network employee group Howard Thomas and Markus Balogun.

Together, we had a challenging, inspiring and entertaining conversation around:

  • How the panellists reclaim narratives in their respective fields
  • Southern’s work 10 years into the Get Into Railways programme with The King’s Trust, developing diverse talent and boosting equal opportunities, including Black community representation in the rail industry
  • Our chosen Southern destinations to keep the conversation going beyond Black History Month, inspiring you to get out and explore!
