Train Service Updates

See if there is any service disruption on the Southern network, check live departures and arrivals from any station or find out about any alternative routes during unplanned disruption.

A fault with the signalling system between Portsmouth Harbour and Havant means trains running between these stations may be delayed by up to 15 minutes or revised.
Disruption is expected until 12:00.
Customer advice:
Some Southern services which run to / from Portsmouth Harbour or Portsmouth & Southsea may be subject to alterations, or delays of up to 15 minutes.
As fewer trains than normal can run between Portsmouth and Havant, some trains will terminate short and start back from other stations on this route, such as Chichester or Bognor Regis.
This will primarily affect services which run between Portsmouth and Brighton. Services which run between Portsmouth and London may also be affected.
You may need to travel using an alternative route. This may involve travelling on a different train to normal, or changing trains at an intermediate station to complete your journey.
You should listen to announcements and check station screens while travelling, and allow an additional 20 minutes to complete your journey.

Trains may be delayed through this area, as they must travel at reduced speed due to a signal fault.
Railway signals warn drivers when they need to stop. Normally, a green light means the track is clear, while yellow signals warn of a red light ahead.
Signalling works on "fail-safe" principles. If a signal cannot change properly, it defaults to a more restrictive setting, causing trains to slow down even if the track is clear.
Network Rail maintains the system, and Southern are working with them to fix the fault as quickly as possible.

A fault with the signalling system at Brockley means trains have to run at reduced speed on some southbound lines. Trains running between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace / Norwood Junction may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes, revised, or diverted.
London Overground services are running normally between Highbury & Islington and Crystal Palace.
Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Southern / Thameslink customer advice:
A signalling fault is affecting trains which usually run between London Bridge, Norwood Junction, and East / West Croydon.
Services that run through this area are likely to be delayed by up to 20 minutes, particularly those running towards Norwood Junction and East / West Croydon.
A significant number of service changes are also in place, which are detailed below.
You may need to travel using an alternative route. This may include travelling on a different train to normal, or changing trains at an intermediate station to complete your journey.
If you do travel using an alternative route, you should allow at least 20 minutes extra to complete your journey. You should listen to announcements and check station screens while travelling for the latest travel information.
Expected service alterations:
South of London
A reduced service will run between Gatwick Airport / Haywards Heath / Brighton and Brighton. If you're travelling along this route, you should travel on alternative Thameslink and Southern services towards your destination. Some trains on this route will call additionally at Norwood Junction.
There will be no Thameslink service between East Grinstead and London. You should travel on alternative Southern services towards your destination.
Some Thameslink services towards Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges will not call at London Bridge or Norwood Junction. You may need to change trains at London Blackfriars for alternative Thameslink services towards your destination.
Some Southern services between Littlehampton and London Victoria will call additionally at Three Bridges.
If you travel to a different London station than normal, you can use your ticket on London Underground services across London to complete your journey.
Services in the London area
There will be no Southern service between London Victoria and London Bridge via Crystal Palace. You should use alternative Southern services, London Underground, London Overground, or London Buses to complete your journey.
There will be no Southern service between Epsom and London Bridge. You should travel on alternative Southern / Thameslink services, or South Western Railway services between Epsom, Wimbledon, and London Waterloo to complete your journey.
There will be a reduced Southern service between Norwood Junction and London Bridge. You should travel on alternative Southern / Thameslink services, Southeastern services between Penge East / New Cross / Crofton Park and London Terminals, London Overground, or London Buses to complete your journey.
North of London
A reduced service will run between Bedford, Luton, and London. You should travel on alternative Thameslink services towards your destination.
There will be no Thameslink service between Cambridge and London. If you're travelling along this route, you should travel on Great Northern services to London, and change at Finsbury Park for alternative Thameslink services, or travel to London Kings Cross. If you are planning on walking, London Kings Cross is a two minute walk from London St Pancras International.
Some Great Northern services which run between Kings Lynn / Ely / Cambridge and London will call additionally at stations en route, including Ashwell & Morden, Stevenage, and Finsbury Park.
If you travel to a different London station than normal, you can use your ticket on London Underground services across London to complete your journey.

Airport journeys:
As this disruption will affect some trains via Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport, please leave plenty of extra time if you are connecting with a flight.
Can you tell me more about the incident?
Yesterday, there were reports of a track circuit failure on one of the two southbound lines in the Brockley area. Track circuits are used to detect and monitor the passage of trains, as part of the signalling equipment.
Network Rail staff have remotely checked the system and discovered an electrical issue. Staff have then attended overnight, but unfortunately the fault could not be resolved, due to the complexity of the problem.
Trains will be stopped and given verbal instructions to travel forward on the affected line, but this will lead to delays, so we have also had to make service changes to reduce congestion.
Many of the service changes will take place in both directions, as otherwise trains and train crew would not be in the correct places to operate the rest of the timetable.

We are aware that industrial action has been announced by some London Underground drivers for Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April.

If this goes ahead it is likely to mean disruption to Underground services across all four days.

We do not anticipate this strike action will impact our services with our trains expected to call at all stations as planned. However, our stations and trains in and around London are expected to be exceptionally busy, so be prepared and allow extra time. If possible, consider travelling outside of the busiest peak times for a more comfortable journey.

Amended late night / end of service Southern service via Streatham Common from Monday 20 to Thursday 23 April

Between London Victoria and Sutton and between London Bridge and Selhurst

Engineering work is taking place between Streatham Common and Selhurst, closing all lines.

From approximately 23:45 until the end of service on Monday to Thursday evenings, trains will run to an amended timetable.

The 23:40 London Victoria to Sutton service will be diverted after Selhurst and terminate at East Croydon. A replacement bus will run from East Croydon to Sutton, calling at West Croydon, then all stations to Sutton.

The 00:01 London Bridge to Selhurst service (Tuesday to Friday) will divert after Tulse Hill and terminate at Norwood Junction. A replacement bus will run from Tulse Hill to Selhurst, calling Streatham Common and all stations via Streatham Common to Selhurst.

Journey times will be increased when using replacement buses.

Buses replace late night trains between Redhill and Reigate from Monday 20 to Thursday 23 April

From approximately 23:00 until the end of service on Monday to Thursday evenings, buses will replace trains between Redhill and Reigate.

The 22:38 and 23:08 London Victoria to Reigate trains will terminate at Redhill. Replacement buses will run from Redhill and Reigate.

Engineering work is taking place between Haywards Heath and Lewes / Eastbourne, closing some lines.

From approximately 21:00 until the end of service on Monday to Thursday evenings, buses will replace trains between Haywards Heath and Lewes / Eastbourne. Some buses will depart Eastbourne earlier to connect with trains from Lewes towards London.

The 01:08 (on Tuesday to Friday mornings) Haywards Heath to Eastbourne train will not run. A replacement bus will run from Haywards Heath to Lewes / Eastbourne.

Please note that journey times will be extended when using rail replacement transport.
