Train Service Updates

See if there is any service disruption on the Southern network, check live departures and arrivals from any station or find out about any alternative routes during unplanned disruption.

  • There was a fire alarm sounding in the signal box at Three Bridges earlier today. This has now ended.

    However, as a result of this, Southern and Thameslink services may be delayed by up to 45 minutes across the network to allow the service to recover.

    This is expected until 20:00.

    Southern and Thameslink customer advice:

    Earlier today, a fire alarm sounding in the control centre caused a fault with the communication systems used by signal boxes. As a result of this, signallers were unable to speak to as many train drivers, control centres and manually operated level crossings as usual.

    The fault has now been rectified however trains will remain amended and still subject to delays as we enter the evening peak.

    Southern services which run between the below areas could be subject to delays of up to 30-45 minutes;

    • Southern services between London Victoria and Eastbourne / Ore / Bognor Regis / Portsmouth Harbour
    • Southern services between Barnham and Littlehampton / Bognor Regis
    • Southern services between Brighton and Chichester / Portsmouth Harbour / Southampton Central

    Some trains have been altered to reduce delays caused by congestion yet maintain connections. The following service alterations are now in place

    • Southern services which usually run between London Victoria and Portsmouth Harbour and Bognor Regis will not split at Horsham and will run between London Victoria and Bognor Regis ONLY. Please change at Barnham for connecting trains towards your destination
    • Southern services which usually run between London Victoria and Eastbourne / Ore will now only run between London Victoria and Eastbourne ONLY. Please change trains at Eastbourne for connecting trains towards your destination

    At present, you can mostly travel using your usual route, but please allow additional time to reach your destination. This is because some trains could be altered and you might need to change onto more than usual services to get to where you need to be.

    Ticket acceptance and alternative routes:

    In case you do find that an alternative route will help you complete your journey faster than it would by train, your ticket will be accepted on the below services at no additional cost:

    • Alternative Southern / Thameslink services via any reasonable route
    • Brighton & Hove buses on the following routes:
      • 1 between Brighton, Hove (town), Aldrington (town), Portslade (town) and Fishersgate (station)
      • 1X between Brighton, Hove (town), Portslade (station), Fishersgate (town)
      • 2 between Brighton, Hove (town), Aldrington town), Portslade (close to the station), and Shoreham-by-Sea (station)
      • 3X between Hove, Brighton, Moulsecoomb, and Falmer
      • 5 between Brighton, Hove (town) and Aldrington (station)
      • 6 between Brighton, Hove (town), and Portslade (station)
      • 7 between Brighton and Hove (station)
      • 21 between Brighton and Hove (station)
      • 46 between Brighton, Hove (town), Aldrington (town), Portslade (station), and Southwick (station)
      • 49 between Brighton, Hove (town), and Portslade (station)
    • Stagecoach buses on the following routes:
      • 700 between Brighton, Hove, Portslade, Shoreham, Lancing, Worthing, West Worthing, Littlehampton, Chichester, Bognor Regis, Bosham, Southbourne, Emsworth, Havant, Hilsea and Portsmouth.
      • 500 between Chichester, Barnham, and Littlehampton.
      • 11 between Worthing, West Worthing, Goring-by-Sea, Littlehampton
      • 9 between Arundel, Littlehampton, Angmering, Worthing, Lancing, and Shoreham-by-Sea

    Can you tell me more about the incident?

    When signal boxes are without phone communications, they are unable to speak to as many train drivers, control centres and manually operated level crossings as usual.

    To combat this, trains will run slower than usual over these areas and this is what will cause delays but will further ensure safety on the network.

  • Lines have reopened following a road vehicle colliding with a bridge in the Southwick area. Trains running between Brighton and Worthing may still be delayed by up to 25 minutes or revised whilst service recovers.

    Disruption is expected until 18:30.

    Customer advice:

    All lines between Worthing and Hove have reopened in both directions and trains are running through this area once more.

    You will no longer need to use an alternative route if you are travelling through this area but your journey time could be extended by up to 50 minutes whilst Southern work to get trains and their crews back on time. Please alllow additional time to reach your destination and check your journey before travelling.

    This could affect your journey if you are travelling on the below Southern services in either direction:

    • London Victoria to Littlehampton (via Hove)
    • Brighton to Chichester
    • Brighton to Portsmouth & Southsea / Southampton Central

    You may also find that you could complete your journey faster using an alternative route. To help you do this, your ticket will be accepted on the below services at no additional cost:

    Can you tell me more about the incident?

    There have been reports of a road vehicle striking a railway bridge in the Southwick area.

    All lines have since reopened and trains can run at their usual speeds now that Network Rail and the emergency services have deemed it safe to do so. Southern take railway safety very seriously and need to make sure it's safe for services to run as planned.

    If you see a vehicle hitting a bridge, or you think a bridge has been damaged, please report it using the phone number on the identification plate fixed to the bridge. If no plate is provided, please report it to the police by calling 999.

  • Following a vehicle colliding with a level crossing at Bedhampton, all lines have reopened. Services running between Havant and Portsmouth & Southsea / Cosham may still be delayed up to 30 minutes, cancelled or revised to allow the service to recover.

    Disruption is expected until 20:00.

    Customer advice for Southern:

    Southern services which run to and from Portsmouth and Southampton could be delayed in the Bedhampton area.

    The lines are once again open, but Southern are working with emergency services to get trains running back at their usual speed as soon as possible.

    For now, you can travel using your usual route, but please allow an additional 20 minutes to reach your destination.

  • On Sunday the Brighton Marathon is taking place:

    • Stations and trains around Brighton will be very busy
    • Especially Brighton and Hove stations
    • Preston Park station will be closed until 11:00 on Sunday morning
    • It may be necessary to queue for trains at the busiest times
    • Please allow extra time for your journey

  • For the week before and after Easter - between Monday 30 March and Friday 10 April - there will be small changes to Southern services between Littlehampton / Bognor Regis / Eastbourne and London Bridge and between East Grinstead and London Victoria.

    On Monday to Thursday, the additional peak-time trains between Littlehampton / Bognor Regis / Eastbourne and London Bridge will not run.

    This applies to the:
    ● 06:05 Littlehampton to London Bridge via Worthing
    ● 06:47 Eastbourne to London Bridge
    ● 07:02 Bognor Regis to London Bridge via Horsham
    ● 17:03 London Bridge to Eastbourne
    ● 17:33 London Bridge to Littlehampton via Worthing
    ● 18:03 London Bridge to Bognor Regis via Horsham

    If you normally travel on these trains you will be able to use other services to complete your journey - with connections to alternative trains available at stations such as Preston Park, Haywards Heath, Three Bridges and East Croydon.

    For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be eight (four in each direction) additional off-peak trains between East Grinstead and London Victoria to provide a half-hourly service during the middle of the day. A half-hourly service already runs all day on Thursdays and Fridays.

    Both of these changes are being made to better support demand during these two weeks over the Easter break as demand for peak time trains decreases and more people travel in the off-peak period instead. Please remember that there will also be engineering work taking place over this period, as well as amended timetables for bank holidays.

  • If you have a train ticket dated from Saturday 28 February and have been affected by ongoing airline disruption, you are able to use your ticket:

    • On a different day
    • Earlier or later on the same day (if you have an Advance ticket)
    • During the morning or evening peak (if you have an Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket) 

    Please ensure that you have evidence of your original airline booking, along with a flight cancellation or amendment notification, ready to show staff. If you are no longer travelling due to a flight cancellation, unused tickets will be entitled to a fee-free refund. 

    Please note, this applies to flights from the following countries only:

    Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and United Arab Emirates.
