Travelling from Brighton with Southern trains, it’s around a 20-minute direct journey to Berwick, where you can enjoy a relaxing day out in the East Sussex countryside.

Set among the lush greenery of the Wealden district, Berwick is a scenic village with a nice, laid-back feel – and it’s also a good base if you’re looking to explore the beautiful South Downs Way.

Around 20 minutes’ walk from the station, you’ll find The Cricketers’ Arms, an excellent traditional pub that’s a great place to stop off after your trip or before departure.

Things to do in Berwick

Drusillas Zoo

With a wide selection of animals including cute meerkats and endangered monkeys, a trip to Drusillas Zoo is a great way to spend an afternoon with the kids.

There’s also a jungle-themed playground called Go Bananas and a Get Wet! Splash Pad – both perfect for when little ones want to let off a bit of excess energy.

And with rides such as Safari Express Train, Flying Cheetahs, Hippopotobus and The Rainforest Carousel, younger boys and girls alike will enjoy a visit to this family getaway.

Berwick Church

If you’re after a spot of local history, head to Grade 1-listed Berwick Church, which takes around five minutes to get to by taxi from the train station.

Surrounded by some stunning scenery, the building itself is a magnificent attraction, but some of the real treasures are housed inside.

Here, you’ll find some fascinating murals painted during the Second World War by a few of the leading artists from the Bloomsbury Group, such as Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.

Thousands of visitors – known as the Bloomsbury Pilgrims – head to the church each year just to view these paintings and take advantage of the guided tour that can be organised through the church’s website.
